Success at TOP 100: Ranga Yogeshwar congratulates nicos AG

Münster, November 26, 2021. nicos AG was congratulated today by Ranga Yogeshwar on its success in the TOP 100 innovation competition with a personal video. The science journalist also recognized the achievements of this year's TOP 100 companies at a joint online conference this Friday. The occasion was the TOP 100 final, which was originally planned as an in-person event. Ranga Yogeshwar is mentoring the innovation competition, which is being held for the 28th time. In the scientific selection process, nicos AG was particularly impressive in size category B (51 to 200 employees in Germany) in the category "Innovation-promoting top management".

nicos board members Robert Holm and Thomas Brosch are ready for the grand finale of the TOP 100 online conference

The TOP 100 company portrait published on the occasion of the award states (excerpt):

The current CEO Thomas Brosch had the business idea back in the 1990s when he was working for an IT system house. He then set up his own business in 2000: nicos develops data networks for medium-sized customers from Germany who do business internationally. Whether in the Amazon region or deepest Russia, the Münster-based company manages to install stable data networks all over the world. They have already been active at over 2,000 customer locations in 130 countries. Data encryption is of great importance for secure transfer. Not only is this sometimes a technical challenge, it can also be politically difficult at times, for example when it comes to networking customer locations with branches in emerging and crisis countries.

Thomas Brosch works closely with the Head of Business Development, who is the interface for the innovative ideas of all teams in the company. "I travel a lot myself and bring my impressions back to the company, where we then develop new solutions together," reports Brosch. Discussions with start-ups in Silicon Valley or in Israel, where cyber security is a top priority, always provide him with new ideas.

Those who do not protect themselves are putting their livelihood at risk

If you don't protect yourself, you risk your livelihood - nicos AG

Those who do not protect themselves are putting their livelihood at risk

Hacker attacks and cybercrime have become an acute threat that can hit any company without warning. Thriving German SMEs are increasingly being targeted by criminals. (This article by nicos CEO Robert Holm was published as a guest article in MARKT and MITTELSTAND.)

It's every company's nightmare: the IT system goes on strike and no longer allows access. Instead, the following message appears on the screen: "Your data is encrypted!" This terrifying message is usually accompanied by a request to pay a high ransom, often in the tens of millions, in order to regain control of the data. Those affected are then faced with the difficult question of how to deal with the blackmail. But no matter what they do, there is no certainty that it will all end well.

Data thieves do not even stop at authorities and public institutions: the case of the district of Anhalt-Bitterfeld, which had to shut down most of its work and services in the summer after criminals paralyzed the computer system, whereupon the district administrator declared the first cyber disaster in the history of Germany, attracted particular attention.

According to a recent study by the IT industry association Bitkom, cybercrime now causes annual losses of more than 220 billion euros to the German economy. This is roughly twice as much as two years ago. Nine out of ten companies were affected by IT security incidents in 2020/2021. The media group Funke, automotive supplier EDAG, food retailer Tegut, switchgear manufacturer Schmersal and Aerzener Maschinenfabrik were among those severely affected, as reported in various media.

Last but not least, companies are threatened by the fact that their own employees are a particularly common gateway for cyberattacks. Criminals specifically use the "human factor" as the supposedly weakest link in the security chain, for example, to gain access to passwords or infiltrate malware. For example, harmless-looking PDF files sent as email attachments can infect an entire IT system - often completely unnoticed by the affected company until the blackmailers get in touch. As a rule, the blackmailers spy on the company virtually for weeks or even months before they then strike seemingly out of nowhere and threaten to paralyze the system, destroy data or make their demands. At this point, they are well informed about their victim, including their solvency and cash holdings.

As large corporations have increasingly protected themselves against such incidents in recent years by setting up powerful IT departments, successful SMEs are now increasingly being targeted. Many of them continue to underestimate the threat of cybercrime. Yet effective protection is essential, not only for self-protection, but also because the ability to demonstrate IT resilience is often already a prerequisite for participating in tenders or using insurance cover.

Companies should therefore not take any unnecessary risks, but take action: A cyber defense assessment, carried out by experienced IT security specialists, is a sensible first step. This allows serious security deficiencies to be uncovered quickly. The aim should be to develop an efficient defense strategy based on a complete package of measures for prevention, detection and response.

Today, effective defenses are essential to protect SMEs. Before it is too late, because there are increasing signs that the acute danger of cyber extortion will not disappear, but will remain a permanent threat. Permanent vigilance through 24/7 monitoring of the IT landscape is a prerequisite for effective protection.

nicos AG publishes 1st sustainability report - nicos AG

Münster, July 16, 2021: "All beginnings are difficult, and that applies equally: There is magic in every beginning. Because when a company introduces a new and consistent corporate responsibility strategy, like nicos AG, it means a lot of (persuasive) work, but on the other hand also many opportunities, ideas and experiences of success," is how Ann Neudek, Director Brand & Corporate Responsibility nicos AG, begins the network specialist's first sustainability report.

A year ago, nicos AG implemented a comprehensive corporate responsibility strategy in its corporate strategy. This marks the beginning of a long-term restructuring process.

Since then, the globally active managed services provider based in Münster/Westphalia has consciously realigned its actions with regard to the environment, social issues and society in a sustainable manner. Components of this new strategy include reviewing all corporate aspects and creating transparency. The creation of a sustainability reportwhich is now available in its first edition.

This report discloses the status quo with key figures and statistics. The sustainability report is aimed at employees, customers, suppliers and anyone interested in nicos AG. The first sustainability report highlights a comprehensive package of measures designed to achieve the following goals:

The health, satisfaction and well-being of employees should be improved and safeguarded through measures, offers and smooth processes. Fairness and sustainability should be taken into account in operational activities and purchasing and, if necessary, compensatory measures should be taken. Responsible and respectful dealings should be maintained with all employees and customers. This also includes respect among employees and towards the company. nicos AG strives to become even more involved as a company in numerous social issues. Targeted investments in training, know-how and qualifications round off the package of measures.

"As an IT service provider, we are convinced that we will only be able to successfully implement our business model in the future by acting responsibly and with foresight," explains nicos CEO Axel Metzger. "We therefore consider sustainability and corporate responsibility to be one of the most important components of our corporate values."

Company founder Thomas Brosch adds: "For this reason, corporate responsibility is an integral part of our corporate strategy. We see it as our duty to act in accordance with the law and our values. It is important to us to give something back to the community."

The first sustainability report is now available as a PDF download on the nicos AG website.

The company also documents its first steps towards sustainability in short, authentic video clips and photos in its CR vlog. It also addresses hurdles that may arise.

We plant our raised bed

Our trainee Peter and Johann from our marketing department visited a herb farm to get new herbs and lettuces for our raised bed.

We plant our raised bed

At the end of May, i.e. the end of the ice saints (last frosts in spring), it was time to redesign our raised beds. So we went to a herb farm together to get some new herbs. Last year we already had tarragon, chives, rocket and mint in the raised beds. In addition to stevia, lemon verbena, lemon balm, basil, apple mint, parsley, snika, some lettuce varieties and many other herbs are currently planted in the raised beds. Everything for the employees of nicos AG, whether for breakfast, tea or a snack, the variety of raised beds has the right herbs for every dish.

Raised beds in general are very practical: you can garden in places where it would otherwise be almost impossible, e.g. on terraces or balconies. The height of a raised bed eliminates the need to bend down, which is easy on the back. Because a raised bed consists of different layers, the soil is often much richer in nutrients than some garden soil. As a result, the harvest in a raised bed is usually much larger.

Mayor Markus Lewe visits network specialist nicos AG

Mayor Markus Lewe visits network specialist nicos AG - nicos AG

Münster, May 4, 2021: Münster's Lord Mayor Markus Lewe accepted the invitation from network specialist nicos AG last Thursday. The occasion was the award as TOP 100 Innovator 2021, which the Münster-based IT service provider received not least because of its new course towards sustainability. But what requirements does a company like the globally active managed services provider have of Münster as a business location?

This was the subject of a lively exchange between nicos AG and Lord Mayor Lewe, who was accompanied by Enno Fuchs, Managing Director of Wirtschaftsförderung GmbH. The City of Münster's aim is to promote and support the economy in order to maintain the appeal of the Westphalian metropolis in competition with the major cities. In an intensive discussion with nicos board members Thomas Brosch and Axel Metzger, as well as Ann Neudek (Director Brand & CR, nicos AG) and Derek Ashby (Director Business Development, nicos AG), Lord Mayor Lewe and Enno Fuchs showed a deep interest in the concerns and innovative future plans of the company, which launched a comprehensive corporate responsibility strategy just over a year ago.

But what can an innovative company like nicos AG do for Münster in return? The keyword "smart city" or "smart and safe city" came up in this context. Derek Ashby, who drives forward topics such as AI (artificial intelligence) at nicos AG, explains: "Smart implies convenience. But what really counts today is safety." To illustrate this, Ashby reports on the current nicos & Friends project, an association of seven companies from a wide range of technological fields. What nicos & FRIENDS have in common is the desire to combine modern technical developments in an interdisciplinary way to solve often familiar problems in the safety and security sector. "One example is Fire Protection 4.0," says Ashby.

Mayor Lewe and Enno Fuchs were informed about the activities of nicos & FRIENDS in a corona-compliant manner and at a safe distance. It quickly became clear that it would be useful to go into more detail in further discussions. "But the Lord Mayor has also announced a further exchange on the topic of sustainability in particular," says Ann Neudek.

The official presentation of the Top 100 Innovator Award at the 7th German SME Summit in Ludwigsburg on November 26, 2021 will certainly provide an opportunity for a reunion with the Lord Mayor, as will the planned housewarming party in June 2022, when the network specialists have moved into their new location in Münster's Rob17.

nicos AG and OEDIV launch strategic cooperation

nicos AG and OEDIV launch strategic cooperation

nicos AG and OEDIV start strategic cooperation - nicos AG

Münster, April 22, 2021. nicos AG, the Münster-based network specialist, and the Oetker Group company OEDIV Oetker Daten- und Informationsverarbeitung KG from Bielefeld have announced their strategic partnership. With immediate effect, the two companies will be working together very closely and on an equal footing to provide joint services in the field of IT infrastructure. The aim is to complement each other's service portfolios with the partner's services and to jointly develop new services.

"Secure and highly available infrastructures are now more important than ever. Especially in times of the corona pandemic, the (further) development of new security services and the continuous adaptation of the service portfolio to the new challenges of medium-sized, globally active companies are necessary," says Thomas Brosch, CEO and founder of nicos AG. "With OEDIV as a premium provider of infrastructure solutions and managed services, we have gained a strong partner to realize our plans."

Martin Stratmann, Managing Director of OEDIV, has known nicos AG since 2011 from initial joint projects and explains the common objective: "IT organizations are generally faced with the challenge of contributing quickly and efficiently to the business success of companies and at the same time have to offer and support increasingly complex IT services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with only slightly increasing budgets. In order to manage and cope with the growing volume of hardware and software products in the information and communication sector, flexibility and specialized know-how are essential. Each partner contributes its core competencies for the customer and thus ensures a high level of expertise." Delia Wulle, Managing Director of OEDIV, is also pleased about the cooperation: "We see ourselves as an extended workbench for the defined IT services of our customers and support them with modular managed services. With nicos AG as an equal partner, we can offer our customers a broader, high-quality service portfolio, particularly with regard to 24/7 WAN operation and global carrier management."

The idea of a partnership between the two managed services providers was born two years ago. The paths of nicos AG and OEDIV had crossed time and again in customer projects. What nicos AG and OEDIV have in common is their shared clientele - German SMEs - and a deep understanding of the specific requirements of this particular clientele.
