WORKSHOP: Session Smart Routing makes networking easier and more secure

Will MPLS become superfluous due to new requirements for site networking?

Constantly growing demands on modern data communication have made data networks increasingly complex. Conventional routers are not really designed for the new tasks. They require load balancers, firewalls, tunnels, MPLS and other components to meet the requirements. However, a point has now been reached where it is becoming increasingly difficult for companies to provide their applications and services. What's more, although MPLS is characterized by availability and reliability, it is also expensive. In addition, they do not provide the flexibility that modern data communication and future changing requirements demand.

nicos WAN-Workshop: SD-WAN versus MPLS

On January 30, 2020, another nicos WAN workshop will take place in which the network experts from nicos AG and specialists from our partner 128 Technology will address an exciting question: Will MPLS become obsolete due to new requirements for site networking? Our experts will present innovative solutions and strategies for a sensible technology mix as the basis for future-proof site networking with an optimized user experience.

IHK awards: nicos trainees among the best!

IHK awards: nicos trainees among the best! - nicos AG

IHK awards: nicos trainees among the best!

This year, two nicos AG trainees were honored by the IHK Nord Westfalen for their excellent examination results.

After the top performance of Corinna Gehrmann, who completed her training as an IT systems administrator with the top grade of "very good" right at the beginning of the year, Max Eickmann also completed his training as an IT specialist for system integration a few months later with excellent results. Both achieved the top result with a shortened training period!

The award ceremony for the trainees with the best grades took place on November 21, 2019 at the IHK training center in Münster, where the young professionals were celebrated by around 400 guests.

We would like to congratulate our former trainees once again.

"With an A in front of the decimal point on their examination certificate, the trainees have laid an excellent foundation for their professional careers," says the IHK Nord Westfalen on its website.

As for Corinna Gehrmann and Max Eickmann, they are now an integral part of the nicos Service Delivery Team and work as Network Implementation Engineers in the field of site networking.

"The regional top honors underline the outstanding achievements of the young trainees and their training companies," says the IHK Nord Westfalen

What is special about training at nicos AG?

"We not only manage to teach the mandatory content of the respective training regulations," says Jana Rutsch, Head of Human Resources at nicos, "but also to incorporate individual and strength-oriented development modules into the training. Our trainees use their own initiative to achieve the best possible results. This enables us to authentically convey the need for lifelong learning, confidence in the future and a willingness to change."

The aim of training at nicos AG is to discover talented young people, to encourage and challenge them so that they can master tasks at a specialist level - with the aim of taking on as many of the young people trained in the company as possible after completing their training and offering them a secure, modern workplace with responsible tasks.

nicos stands for Network of International Communication Solutions.

As an expert in secure, global data communication, nicos connects companies worldwide with their branches via data networks, also known as WANs or wide area networks. IT system administrators and IT specialists for system integration are essential for this. nicos AG trains them in its own company. In the coming year, committed and motivated young people will once again have the opportunity to start an excellent apprenticeship at nicos AG.

NEW: nicos Cyber Defense Service for protection against cyber attacks

NEW: nicos Cyber Defense Service for protection against cyber attacks - nicos AG

NEW: nicos Cyber Defense Service for protection against cyber attacks

Threats from cyberspace are on the rise. As a result, there is a growing concern that business-critical data could be destroyed by such hacker attacks. Cyber attacks are also becoming increasingly sophisticated. Conventional protective measures alone are no longer sufficient. This is why nicos AG has added a new service to its solution portfolio. With the cyber security solution, customers receive the necessary technology and all services from a single source, around the clock.

Cyber attacks are a real threat and an ever-increasing danger.

Cyber criminals are taking an increasingly subtle approach and attacking companies in a targeted manner. For example, they send their victims personalized phishing emails. They often infiltrate systems in order to access data or paralyze computers. Companies try to counter attacks with password protection, virus scanners, firewalls, intrusion detection or prevention systems (IDS, IPS), etc.. However, these conventional protective measures alone are no longer sufficient.

Social media (XING, Linked-In, Facebook, etc.), cloud services and also competing requirements in one's own company (security vs. time-to-market) are factors that favor the situation of cyber criminals. At the same time, they are making the situation increasingly difficult for companies. Added to this is a lack of awareness within the company and a lack of sensitization among employees. In addition, the necessary specialist personnel are often not available within the company.

Medium-sized companies in particular are facing a new challenge here.

With this in mind, nicos AG has added another service to its portfolio of security solutions. We offer all services from a single source, from the concept to the organizational structure to the operation of the cyber security solution. We also provide the necessary technology.

nicos Cyber Defense Service for protection against cyber attacks

With our system for Security Information and Event Management (SIEM), our SOAR platform (Security Orchestration, Automation and Response) and our 24/7 SecOC (Secure Onboard Communication), we help our customers to ward off cyber attacks and keep damage to a minimum.

WORKSHOP: The challenge of network security

WORKSHOP: The challenge of network security - nicos AG

WORKSHOP: The challenge of network security

SD-WAN: Ever faster, more flexible, more cost-effective - but also more secure?

Companies are increasingly turning to SD-WAN solutions to establish faster, more flexible and more cost-effective networks. Their biggest challenge is network security. On November 27, 2019, you can look forward to another nicos WAN workshop in which we will get to the bottom of an exciting question. Our network experts and IT security specialists from our partner Fortinet will shed light on the topic of "SD-WAN with Built-in Security" together with you.

Find out what a SECURE SD-WAN looks like in practice and what possibilities this innovative solution opens up.

Increasingly sophisticated security threats are coming up against comparatively weak security infrastructures. Fabian Schmid from Arrow ECS presents the Fortinet Security Fabric, a comprehensive, integrated and automated security solution that helps to reduce attack surfaces, nip threats in the bud with AI control and reduce complexity through automated processes and orchestration. Security expert Michael Sichler, Manager of Security Solution Center at nicos AG, will show you how you can implement your requirements for intelligent routing and the optimization of your data connections - with the help of all available connections - using practical examples.

Advanced IT security from the whiteboard into practice

In the middle of 2019, IT managers could breathe a sigh of relief: the malware "Emotet" took a break and the "GandCrab" developers even retired their malware. But after the summer break, "Emotet" has come back stronger and is once again infecting a number of organizations - and there is also a possible successor to "GandCrab" in the form of "REvil". It is clear that holistic IT security must be fundamentally incorporated into a company's concepts and practically strengthened at all levels - be it in the protection of traditional IT companies or increasingly digitalized industrial networks with ICS systems, says Dominique Petersen, M.Sc., Head of Advanced Threat Detection - finally safe GmbH.

Discuss interactively and together with experts whether we are heading towards a wonderful, fully networked future or whether we are sliding into a nightmare scenario of unmanageable security problems.

Securely in the cloud! Without compromising on transparency and security!

Securely in the cloud! Without compromising on transparency and security! - nicos AG

Securely in the cloud!

No compromises in terms of transparency and security!

With the growing range of cloud services, the issue of security is increasingly coming into focus. Public cloud providers generally only protect their own infrastructure against attacks and only take responsibility for the general security of the data centers, the cloud platform and the network infrastructure. According to the principle of shared responsibility, the customer is responsible for the data stored in the public cloud.

The use of multiple cloud platforms makes it increasingly difficult to achieve transparency and efficient security. If your company provides different security solutions for each cloud platform, the risk of security gaps, excessive complexity and compliance monitoring problems increases.

Security requirements
for the use of cloud services

An effective cloud security strategy is based on the following building blocks:

  • Monitoring of all security incidents in the cloud used
Use the mechanisms and information sources provided by the respective cloud provider and integrate them automatically into your existing monitoring.
  • Risk management for all clouds
Depending on the cloud provider, consider what type of data is stored and processed in the relevant clouds. The provider's commitments regarding the physical storage location are particularly important here.
  • Consistent compliance with security guidelines across the entire network
Raise awareness among employees in your company and inform users that the cloud is not part of the internal network, but a protected platform that is still partially available on the Internet and accessible to the public.
  • Compliance with legal regulations
When deciding which data to store and process in the cloud, legal regulations such as the GDPR as well as desired ISO certifications are relevant.
  • Uniform user and action-based authentication
When selecting a cloud provider, make sure that integration into your company's existing authentication mechanisms can be guaranteed.

Where dedicated network connections reach their limits and managed VPN connections offer more security

For a secure connection from the corporate network to the public cloud, the leading public cloud providers AWS and Azure provide a service that establishes a dedicated network connection to the respective public cloud. This service is suitable for connecting a central location to the respective cloud provider. However, the service reaches its limits when connecting globally networked and fully meshed branch offices.

For reasons of security and flexibility, it is therefore advisable to establish managed VPN connections to the cloud gateway in certain regions in order to provide services centrally.

A virtual firewall can be set up in a public cloud as a VPN remote station to connect your locations in the respective region and ensure that the corresponding public cloud services can be used via this secure connection.

This ensures the seamless integration of cloud services into your company network - without compromising on transparency and security!
